Phumzile is an entrepreneur leading a renewable energy and circular-economy enterprise that transforms waste into clean biodiesel while creating inclusive, sustainable green livelihoods.
What exactly do you do in your current job?
I am the founder and managing director of Lathitha Biodiesel, where I lead strategy, partnerships, and operations to convert waste into biodiesel while building inclusive green livelihoods for women and youth.
What inspired you to start working in sustainable energy?
I was inspired by seeing how waste mismanagement and energy poverty affect the same communities, and I wanted to create practical solutions that protect the environment while creating inclusive economic opportunities through sustainable energy.
Can you tell us how you began working in sustainable energy? In other words, what training, education or career steps did you take to enter the sector?
My journey into sustainable energy began through hands-on entrepreneurship and community-based work rather than a single formal pathway. I started by working closely with waste management challenges in underserved communities and learning about renewable energy and circular economy solutions through research, pilot projects, accelerators, and mentorship programs. Over time, I built technical understanding through partnerships with research institutions, industry experts, and practical on-the-ground implementation, which led to the creation of Lathitha Biodiesel.
What do you love about working in the sustainable energy sector?
I love that working in sustainable energy allows me to create solutions that protect the environment while directly improving people’s lives, especially by turning everyday waste into clean energy, income, and long-term opportunity for communities.
